nature's variety raw chicken - voluntary recall

it seems a small amount of raw chicken tested positive for low-level salmonella at a nature's variety plant in texas. they have issued a voluntary recall on frozen chicken patties and medallions with the best by date of 11/10/10. all affected product is returnable.

no animals or people have been affected. this is a pre-emptive step taken by nature's variety as part of their quality control program.

we want to encourage feeders of raw food to keep investing in the health of their pets by feeding species-appropriate diets, like nature's variety. canine guts have evolved to process huge loads of bacteria found in dead and decaying prey and even in cases of large salmonella outbreaks it was the humans, not the dogs, who were affected.

recall redux

remember the pet food recall of 2007? looks like the fda and a few pharmaceutical companies don't.

commonly used veterinary drugs, butorphanol and ketamine, were recalled in july - so why didn't anyone know?

"this void of information, from the highest corporate levels of Big Pharma, to the halls of government, right down to the plight of a sick dog and his worried owner, does as much damage to public health as tainted food and drugs."
