LA's t-n-r upset

we're back to birds versus cats. last month the los angeles superior court sided with the audubon society and other bird groups in a bid to prevent the city from subsidizing the area's large-scale trap-neuter-return program.

the real debate brought up by the case was whether t-n-r works. obviously the deciding judge doesn't think so. but we do. a lot of cats would probably agree with us, too. how about you? vote here.

feral cats and ninja rats

duluth adopted out its first feral cats, giving them a second chance at life. see, even in non-no kill cities, having faith in the community and relying on the kindness of strangers can save countless lives. maybe this is the first step to initiating a real t-n-r program that will save so many more.

in other cat news:

allerca, the company behind the supposedly "allergy-free cat" that bred and sold cats for thousands of dollars a pop, is going out of business.

UK comic, Russel Brand, says he won't move to the states to be with his gf, katy perry, unless his kitty can come, too.

the brits don't have the only mass-tranist-loving felines; boston's subway kitty, kenmore, has a new, less noisy, home.

and last, but not least, the ninja rats have arrived. nikki luvs hers because she thinks of herself as a bit of a samurai. her claws agree.

compassionate cats

the beginning of a new generation of cat-lovers: a new school program teaches children to have empathy for animals, especially kitties.

the no kill revolution marches on with communities nationwide embracing the humane approach of t-n-r for feral colony management.

"one gay man, two lesbians, a three-legged cat and a poisoned curry plot" - best headline ever?

honda gets smart, releases a car for dog-lovers - "features on the dog-friendly model include a cushioned cargo bed area with safety restraints, second-row pet seating with restraints, a spill-resistant water bowl, special ventilation fans, bone and paw print-patterned floor mats and a retractable ramp to help animals get in and out of the vehicle."

if they ever release a cat-friendly car let's hope it doesn't look like this.

indoor/outdoor - the debate goes on

we are happy to see trap-neuter-return back in the pages of national news site msnbc. the first step to achieving no kill status is public awareness of other alternatives to the traditional shelter approach.

but don't get too excited because a new york times piece on the old cats-vs-birds debate has this to say, "in the view of many wildlife researchers, a pet cat on a lap may be a piece of self-cleaning perfection, but a pet cat on the loose is like a snakefish or English ivy: an invasive species."

the sicko, who duct-taped a stray cat for no real reason, has been arrested and could face up to two years in jail. maybe he'll get to try on a duct-tape jumpsuit.

superior court judge sets new precedent in three-year dog-custody battle. remember, folks, sharing is caring.

the new doggielovedol

chicagoland begins the steady trek toward no kill by embracing t-n-r:

"Pina remembers trapping cats in a Pilsen alley one summer night last year when a pair of menacing-looking young men approached her and fellow cat advocate Anna Morrison-Ricordati.

The men left the women alone only after the women promised not to take the cats to a shelter. The toughs said they didn't want to see the cats killed.

"It was very cute," Morrison-Ricordati said.

dottie iz serious cat. this is serious bizness.

follow up to the kind-hearted cat-napper story from monday - the good news, almost all of those cats have been adopted. the bad news - "since wednesday, at least 25 more cats have been brought to the shelter, Nagy said. and today more will be euthanized." sad. looks like that shelter needs a crash course on no kill and to have more faith in their community.

the first-ever all-pet airline had its first flight this week. hope no one needed a bark bag!

caged, filthy dogs and organic milk - an unlikely pairing. interesting article on how puppy mills are intertwined with other industries.

"you have a great organization. we owe you a great deal of gratitude."
what every local t-n-r group wants to hear from the city who had wanted to kill its feral cat population.

but if we hide the litter box how will we know when our furry deities have left us a magical gift?

the oregonian woman, who is obsessed with rabbits, really needs to check out this site to see just how disappointed they are with her.

former presidential cat, the beloved socks, has been laid to rest back at the arkansas governor's mansion. now he can lounge on the back porch and wander the flower gardens he loved.

yay! "throughout New Jersey, forward thinking town officials are increasingly seeking to develop TNR programs to manage feral cats." 'nuff said.

this amazing dog
may have lost two legs, but his heart is twice as big. now we have to stop the puppy mills to ensure this never happens again!

madison t-n-r

interested in t-n-r but don't know much about it? ever thought of helping out with local trap-neuter-return programs but are not sure how to get started? then the upcoming presentation at the dane county humane society is for you. dane country friends of ferals, shelter from the storm and the humane society have teamed up to give the program a much-needed boost and encourage volunteers to get out there and help manage our local feral populations. remember, it takes a village to raise a child, and it takes a wonderful city of cat-lovers to go no kill.

where - dchs - 5132 voges rd., madison
this event is free and open to anyone with a willing heart

now, for a laugh check out this consumer reports piece on pet food and how there's no real difference between grocery store brands and "the more expensive" stuff. shyeah right! the real guffaw comes at the end when the vets (all but one received support from pet food manufacturers!) mention what they feed their own pets.

rescue goes global

while we like to focus on and encourage rescue in our own neck of the woods today we want to report on the growing movement around the world. international agencies focused on human relief, like, doctors without borders and the red cross have worked tirelessly for decades to help people in economically depressed countries. now we're seeing that compassion and spirit starting to be directed at the world's companion animals through similar progams, like, vets without borders. even in lesser developed nations, like nicaragua, there are organizations developed to help not only people, but also cats, dogs and horses. in a place where someone might worry about having enough money or food to make it to next week the idea of paying to spay or neuter their own animals is genereally out of the question. casa lupita, the animal-based front of building new hope is trying to do just that. the rooftop cats and street dogs of granada are receiving a helping hand from this group that supports trap-neuter-release and provides food and medical care for the city's animals. the change may be slow-moving but it's happening.

cleveland rocks!

happy news, everyone! both theo and buddy were adopted last night! we wish them and their new families the best of luck in their new lives together.

in other news, the practices of t-n-r and no kill are still spreading throughout the nation, most recently in cleveland where the city has earmarked $40,000 to go towards public assistance for spay/neuter.

" city council members say they get more complaints about roaming cats than potholes or burned-out streetlights."

if only madison was as forward thinking....
